9 Whitening Functional Ingredients Approved by the Korean MFDS for Cosmetic Use
(At least one of the following ingredients must be included to be recognized for whitening efficacy.)
Vitamin C is easily oxidized and degraded when exposed to heat, air, and moisture, which poses a challenge for its use as a cosmetic ingredient due to instability over time. However, EVC (Ethyl Ascorbic Acid) addresses this issue by introducing an ethyl group to the 3-hydroxyl position—the site responsible for Vitamin C’s degradation—thereby significantly enhancing its stability. Once absorbed into the skin, EVC is metabolized just like Vitamin C, making it an ideal cosmetic ingredient for effective topical delivery of Vitamin C.
Unlike regular Vitamin C, which is water-soluble and has difficulty penetrating the skin’s lipid layers, EVC (Ethyl Ascorbic Acid) possesses both water- and oil-soluble properties. This allows it to be effectively absorbed through the skin, passing through the epidermis and reaching the dermis layer.
EVC is a water- and oil-soluble antioxidant with strong reducing power. It prevents degradation in cosmetic formulations by reducing lipids and oxidized substances. Since it is metabolized in the body in a manner similar to Vitamin C, it is considered safe for use.
Unlike Vitamin C, which is a purely water-soluble antioxidant with poor stability and limited solubility in general solvents, EVC (Ethyl Ascorbic Acid) is soluble not only in water but also in oils, alcohols, and various organic solvents. As a result, it can be easily incorporated into virtually any formulation or preparation—including suspensions, creams, lotions, oil-in-water emulsions, solid-containing lotions, masks, lipsticks, patches, and sheets. EVC is suitable for use in whitening and anti-aging cosmetics, as well as in formulations aimed at relieving or preventing inflammation and fatigue in muscles and joints.
EVC (Ethyl Ascorbic Acid) exhibits a dose-dependent effect on skin cells and collagen biosynthesis. This ingredient enhances collagen production and exerts strong reducing power. It also reduces the copper ion in tyrosinase, thereby deactivating its enzymatic activity and strongly inhibiting melanin formation, which is responsible for dark spots. Additionally, it helps to brighten skin tone by reducing already-formed melanin, making it an effective whitening and anti-aging ingredient.
EVC (Ethyl Ascorbic Acid) exhibits strong anti-inflammatory effects when applied topically to the skin. It has been shown to suppress serotonin-induced edema. In an animal study, swelling induced by serotonin injection in mice was significantly reduced by applying a gel formulation containing 3% EVC to the affected area.
Our company has simplified the manufacturing process of EVC (Ethyl Ascorbic Acid), significantly reducing production costs. With world-class purification technology, we have achieved the highest purity levels, effectively overcoming the limitations of existing products. As a result, we are able to produce high-purity EVC at a competitive price, offering superior cost-performance and market competitiveness both domestically and internationally.
